Good old Share for WordPress

good old share pluginGood old Share is a free WordPress plugin, developed to simplify post sharing on the best social networks.

The plugin inserts buttons above or below the post, enabling you to share it on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Linkedin and other social websites.

Download the plugin from the official WordPress repository:

Description

This plugin shows Facebook, Twitter and other share buttons above or below your posts. Easy customization of active buttons and position in the Settings menu.

Facebook Like and Twitter Share buttons are loaded by default. Other buttons, including Digg, Facebook Share, Flattr, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Bitcoin, Litecoin, Stumbleupon, Youtube, Hyves, Print, Email, RSS, Reddit, Tipy, Tumblr, Buffer, Pinzout, can be added through the Settings->Good old share menu.

Please be careful when selecting the Show buttons in these pages options : it can interact badly with other slide/fade/carousel/sidebar active plugins.

If you want to place the active buttons only in selected posts, use the “good_old_share” shortcode.

If you want to hide the share buttons inside selected posts, set the “good_old_share_disable” custom field with value “yes”.

Faq

What’s the difference between Facebook Like and Share buttons?

Facebook Like’s behaviour is similar to Facebook Share: it is a counter and if you click it a story is published inside your Wall on Facebook. We suggest you to use Facebook Like because it works better identifying title and text for the story to be published and it’s the only one currently developed by Facebook.

Why users can’t choose which image to share when using Facebook Like button?

This is an automated Facebook behaviour: clicking Facebook Like the user can’t choose each time which image to share, but you can set the right image inside the code using the Open Graph Tag og:image.

When I activate the plugin it messes up with other plugins showing post excerpts in different ways (fade, carousel, sidebar). What can I do?

Uncheck all the “Show buttons in these pages” options in the Settings->Good old Share menu, except for “Single posts”. This way all the share buttons should disappear, except the one displayed beside the post in every Single post page.

Is it possible to modify the style/css of the buttons?

Yes, every button has its own div class (e.g. “good_old_share_twitter”) for easy customization inside the theme css files. Plus, the div surrounding all buttons has its own class “good_old_share”.

Is there a way to select the image Facebook will display once the content is published on the timeline? When I click any post, it always displays the same image…

Thanks for the great work, I tried not less than 20 plugins, and yours was, by far, the best.

    Hi,

Your Really Simple Share for WordPress is a great plug-in. But my only question is if it is possible to see who has “liked” a page?
Is there a way of going to each “llker’s” Facebook page?

    Thanks,
    Robert

      Hi Robert,
The Facebook APIs does not tell you the users who have liked a particular URL, for privacy reasons. If the given URL is linked to a Facebook Page (e.g. the site home page), you can see the likers directly on Facebook or by adding a Facebook Like Box to your site.

        WhileTrue,

Thank you so much for your feedback. I would like to clarify what you said. You mentioned that the only way to see who liked a page on the site is to link the site to Facebook. So I have a couple of questions:

        1) How would I link the site to a Facebook page?

        2) If the site is linked to a Facebook page, then how would I know who liked a page on the site? Where would it show up on the Facebook page?

Thank you very much for all your help.

        Robert

          1) You can add the following metadata to your website’s header:
          <meta property="fb:app_id" content="[FB App ID]" />

          2) In the Insights section of the Facebook page.

Thank you again for your response.
For some reason, the metadata you mentioned did not show up when you posted.
Might you please be able to post it again?

            Thanks!!

            Hi,
I was able to get the App ID, but I am not sure where to put it.
You say I should put it “in the Web site’s header.”
Can you tell me which file this is? Is it header.php?
If so, I tried it and it did not work.

            Thank you!

          3. avatarWhileTrue Post author

Hi Robert, we decided to implemented it natively. If you update the plugin now (version 2.8 was released yesterday), the AppID can be put in the plugin settings page, in the new field next to the Facebook Like button.

          4. avatarRobert

            Hi,
Thank you for the reply. Also great update, I added the App ID.

However….I cannot see still who “liked” my page. (I did some test “likes”.)
I went to http://www.facebook.com/insights in hopes that I would see it, but I didn’t. The page is blank.

Perhaps I did not get the proper App ID?
Can you tell me what may be going wrong?

            Thank you again,
            Robert

          5. avatarKaren

I noticed that the Facebook “Like” button has a spot for an “app ID #” next to it.

I have a Facebook business page. As far as I can tell in my settings, there is no “app ID.” How do I get it?

Also, I noticed that Facebook “likes” are showing on my blog, but not on my Facebook page. Is the “app ID” what makes them transfer over and show up?

          6. avatarWhileTrue Post author

Hi, in order to get an AppID you have to create a Facebook App; it’s not required to have the buttons work, it just gives you insights about the people who pressed the button. The website and Facebook Page use different counters, if you want to show your Facebook Page counter in your site put the Facebook Page URL in the “fixed sharing url” plugin option; this will overwrite every FB button count.

  3. avatarKathryn

Not a huge deal but did the counter option on the Pinterest button get taken out or is mine just acting up? I loved that feature but lost it after one of the updates…

    Reply
    1. avatarWhileTrue Post author

The Pinterest counter shows up only if there is at least one share, after some time. Sometimes it’s not loaded correctly, maybe it’s due to some cache issues on the Pinterest’s servers.

    1. avatarWhileTrue Post author

It seems related to the Author field incorporating the buttons. While we work on this, you can try to go to the plugin Settings page and set the Position option to “only below the posts” so that the button rows won’t be coupled together.

In fact the “Pin It” is shown, while the button fails to load; this could be caused by your template. You can try to change some plugin settings, including “Load scripts at the bottom of the body” under Advanced Options, and “Use multiple image selector” and “Use old button code” under Pinterest Options.

    Hello.
After the latest update of of the plugin, when i click on PIN IT button, the sharer opens in the same window. It was opening in a new box a few days back. Can you look into the matter?

Another problem is with Twitter : Add author to follow list: In this option there’s only 1 check box, can’t we write our name in that place so that real Author Account will be followed by our users? At the moment its only following same useraccount of twitter as mentioned in wordpress, so its a bit hard to get maximum benefit from this feature.

    Thanks

Hi Shahid, we’re still working on the PinIt button, in some sites the sharer opens in the same window, in other opens in a popup.

As for Twitter, you can enter the Author Account in the “Add user to follow list” setting field; the checkbox options is more useful when you manage a multi-author blog.

Hi Alex, the first post on your site counts (to me) 3 tweets; your second post had 0 tweets, I tweeted it, now it shows 1 tweet so I guess everything is fine.

Please consider that the counter are cached, so you’ll continue to see 0 tweets for some hours if you already loaded the website before; to see the actual counters wait some time or load your site with another browser.

Hi, you can center with CSS, them giving their surrounding

      a fixed width, like this:
      .really_simple_share { width: 300px; margin: 0 auto; }
Find the best width (approx 100px for every button) and put the code in your theme “style.css” file.

Hi Mark, the Email button is a “mailto:” link, so it opens the new message window of the user’s email client. In some cases, e.g. when the website visitor hasn’t a default email client on his device, it could stop working.

Hi there. Great plug-in. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Does this plug-in use third-party cookies, and therefore does it need a warning for users?

My very limited understanding of the cookie law in the EU is that most cookies, used to operate a site, do not need pop-ups/warnings, but that you should warn people when you oblige them to share their data with third parties, e.g. advertisers, Google, Facebook.

    Thanks.

Hi, I tested the last releases on different sites, sometimes the options get corrupted after several plugin updates. To provide a standard solution I put a new “Reset to Default values” button on the 2.13 release out today. If your options pane is messed up with recent updates, use the Reset button (on the lowest right of the plugin settings page) to give the plugin a fresh start. Please take a note of your plugin configuration before resetting the options, or remember the data you want to put back in.

Another big difference is that on the site it works within there are loads of options in SHARE BUTTONS section bit on the site it doesn’t there are only YouTube, Goofle+ and a blank one?

Hi owen, this isn’t possible at the moment, because we publish external sharing code, provided by every social network.
We’ll think about implementing them natively, but this way the counters would be difficult to retrieve and publish.

    Selective hide
If you want to hide the share buttons inside selected posts, set the “really_simple_share_disable” custom field with value “yes”.
Is there a short code to make this happen or is this edit the only way for it to work?

I am also panicking about an other detail… all posts on my website LOST the count of likes and share on twitter… I didn’t edit anything in the native code of the plugin, I only updated it a few days ago.

    Hi,

Thanks for your quick response =)
I changed the permalinks on my wp install because I had a problem setting a domain name correctly (I installed my website on a personal server, and then I give the website his own domain)
I also set 301 redirection via .htaccess file, to keep every link pointing to my website working. Don’t you think it can be that change of url that interferred with the plugin ? I personnaly have no clue, but I suspect that…

I try things you said, first restoring the horrible default permalinks provided by wordpress, but the counter stil set 0 on every single article.
I also tried to reset the plugin… but neither did it work.

    Reply
    1. avatarWhileTrue Post author

Hi, every counter is linked to its original url, so I think 301 redirection won’t work. About the summaries, verify that the “Disable buttons on excerpts” option is disabled; if so, probably there’s something to adjust (e.g. changing “the_excerpt” calls with “the_content”) inside your theme files.

I just turned on the pin it hover image button, and I was wondering if you could make it pull from the alt text for the description and then if nothing is there, pull the title? As you know, currently it pulls the title. I have been adding alt text descriptions on all my images and would love to take advantage of that with the pin it hover button feature. (The browser extension pin it plugins do pull the alt text and it’s becoming standard practice for bloggers to use alt text for pinning.) Thanks for considering! Hi Jason, unfortunately I’ve no clue to figure it out. Probably some php errors somewhere in the site are blocking it. You can display some error data by appending (temporarily) this line to the plugin really-simple-share-options.php file:

Hi again…. I am sorry to have to trouble you again but I am still struggling with this. I perhaps need to explain to you a little more about what I am doing. I have a WP Facebook button installed on my web pages. This button is used in short code so that it can be entered where I want it to be . I was using it a footer widget. I also installed your Facebook really simple button and selected to use the shows the same counts. This in fact worked alongside the WP Facebook like button as I untucked the options of where to show the button and just selected the option of show same counts. It worked with the existing WP Facebook button and the counts showed the same in the foot widget on every page. Great – this was fantastic…. just what I wanted. The overnight for some bizarre reason that I cannot explain the counters went weird. I removed both the WP Facebook button and the Really Simple one ands re installed. the count cam back as 16 BUT only on one page?? the other pages were 0 counts. I am now at the stage where I have removed the short code from the widget and just left it on one page and removed altogether from other pages. this is so disappointing as I really wanted a counter like button on every page – are you able to give me a short code to use with your counters that I can use in a widget and explain fully how to embed the code so that all counters read the same. I am feeling somewhat desperate now… it is so frustrating when something works well for over a week or more then collapses on you!. Hope you can spare a few minutes to help me . The page I have the count set for is http://www.beaconoflightenfield.co.uk/services. I get the code from Facebook – but perhaps I am selecting the wrong one – should I use XFBML,HTML5,iFrame or URL?

I have checked and applied the solution in your FAQ (only show buttons in single posts), but that does not solve it. The plugin has been working fine for many months, but since a couple of weeks I experience this. I had it analyzed by the developer of my theme and their answer was:
“The excerpts and share buttons are outside of all the widgets and the generated tag has a line break in the middle of it, which WordPress changes to and so the browser copes with the invalid syntax. ”

I have tried your plugin and like it, however, once the plugin is configured, some posts appear repeated many times in the right hand widget column and I cannot find a way to remove it other than to turn the whole plugin off. Frustrating.

Hi, just add to your theme style.css file a line like this:
      .good_old_share div { float: none; padding-left: 0; min-height: 30px; }

    Hi

Running version 3.2.3 on two sites.

The “Print” option is missing from one of the sites. All other options are the same.

The WP site it is missing from was originally running English, whereas the other always was in Danish. Now both are English. Print has been missing all along, but mentioning the language thing because it is the only difference (pretty much) between the two sites.

How to show share bar above the thumbnail and down the title (between title and thumbnail)?
Now it shown down the thumbnail and it is very ugly!

I have problem because my share bar show at bottom of featured image, but must to show between title and featured image. How to do that? How to set this?
Where is defined where in page will be loaded share bar?

This plugin is great as no 3rd party account is needed. I would like each button that appears to have image alt text associated with it. This is an SEO standard. For example, when the FB like button shows, the alt text could be “Like on Facebook”. This helps with SEO and with screen readers. Thanks.

My site is unable to upgrade to PHP 8.0 because I use the Really Simple Facebook share plug in. Can you tell me if you are going to update this so it is compatible or what I can do instead? I am not tech savvy! Thanks
